Worshipping

Services in the Chaplaincy broadly follow the patterns of the Church in Wales / Church of England. During term time we offer daily prayer for the global Church, the needs of the world, and the life of our University. Our worship is open to all.

Sunday

Music is an important part of our worship. This is coordinated by the Church Music Scholars, Garry Peel and Joseph Girling. Garry and Joseph work together in leading the Chaplaincy Singers. The Singers meet in the chapel for a rehearsal on Thursday evenings (5.45-6.45pm) and sing during the Sunday morning Communion service. Recent recordings of the Chaplaincy Singers can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftQbYiac_S4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr3K4-btpGI. For more information please email Garry on peelgarry@hotmail.com.

In the past we have offered a simple Sunday School at the back of chapel for children. This ran short and engaging activities based on the theme of the service. It could be made available again for staff or students needing this provision. All volunteers working with children in the Chaplaincy are appropriately trained and work within the guidelines of our Child Protection Policy.

Although most of the Sunday congregation are on limited student budgets, we take seriously our Christian calling to help those less fortunate than ourselves by making a collection at the end of our Sunday morning service. Each year we aim to collect for an international, national, and local charity - one each term. In the 2009-10 academic year we raised a total of £700. We have been collecting in the autumn term of 2011 for Iris, a developing world educational charity and in early 2012 will be supporting the Cathedral Foodbank, a local support for those on the streets.

Students help the Chaplain in many other ways on Sunday mornings: welcoming (coordinated by Abi Marchant), reading, leading prayers, and serving. The Sacristan, Amyelia Park, helps keep the chapel tidy and prepares for services.

Gluten-free wafers are available on request at our Communion services.

There is an Anglican service in Bangor every Sunday at 6.30pm. This migrates between different churches to allow congregations to experience a variety of worship styles and venues. On the first and second Sundays of the month this service is in St Mary's (Deiniol Road), on the third Sunday of the month at St David's (Caernarfon Road), and on the fourth Sunday of the month in the Chaplaincy. Sunday evening worship at the Chaplaincy is varied and often student-led: band praise, Taize music, High Mass.

Monday - Friday

Some of these services are led by students and some by the Chaplain

Christian Staff Network

This is a group of Christian members of staff from across the University and from many different church backgrounds. It meets to bring before God the needs and pressures of University life, and to offer support for one another. To receive regular mailings from the network and for further information please contact Dr Sarah Jackson: s.m.jackson@bangor.ac.uk. The Network will be meeting on the following Wednesdays (1-2pm) in the Chaplaincy chapel: Sept 14th, Oct 5th, Nov 2nd, Dec 7th 2011. Some of these meetings will include reflections led by members of the University Chaplaincy Team.

Quiet Space

The chapel is open 8am - 10pm as a place of calm and peace. There are numerous resources to help you think, pray and find comfort: Bibles, simple prayers, a votive stand to light candles, and a book to write your thoughts and feelings which will be offered to God during services. Please join us in praying for the needs of the University by using the University Prayer Cycle.
